Watch:

Translation (SLIDE) – can be done in any direction, but without turning (ROTATING) the object or shape. It remains the same way. The shape and size of the object does not change.

Reflection (FLIP) – the mirror image of an object or shape, so that each point of the object or shape is the same distance from the mirror line as the same point on the image. The shape and size of the object does not change.

Rotation (TURN) – The process by which a shape or object changes position by rotating about a fixed point through a given angle. The shape and size of the object does not change.

ACTIVITY ONE:

  1. Choose one block and trace around it on paper.
  2. Now translate the shape in any direction and draw around it again.
  3. Describe what happened to the shape.
  4. What has changed? What has stayed the same?
  5. Now use the same shape and reflect the shape.
  6. Again, Describe what happened to the shape.
  7. What has changed? What has stayed the same?
  8. Now use the same shape and rotate the shape.
  9. Again, describe what happened to the shape.
  10. What has changed? What has stayed the same?

ACTIVITY TWO:

  1. In pairs, using pattern blocks, one student creates a pattern or design using 8 -10 pieces. The other person now has to create the same pattern, but reflected. You could use a pencil to create a mirror line (line of symmetry).
  2. What has changed? What has stayed the same? Write down your observations.
  3. Now the other person can create a pattern or design using 8 -10 pieces. The other person now has to create the same pattern, but translated.
  4. Repeat for rotation.
  5. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE PHOTOS OF YOUR WORK.
  6. Create a blog post reflection about today’s activity. You will need to add all the photos and an explanation of your learning.
